How is 3D print cost calculated?
Four ingredients: material (part weight × cost per gram), machine time (print hours × hourly rate), labor (setup and handling), and markup. This calculator applies exactly that formula — the same one PrintQuote Pro shops use for real quotes.
How much does 3D printing cost per gram?
Filament itself typically runs $0.02–$0.08 per gram for PLA and PETG. Shops charge more than raw material cost because machine time, electricity, failures, and labor all factor in.
Why does infill change the price?
Infill is how solid the inside of the part is. 20% infill uses roughly a fifth of the material of a solid part and prints much faster, so both material and machine cost scale with it.
Is my STL file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is parsed and measured entirely in your browser using JavaScript — it never leaves your computer. Refresh the page and it's gone.
How accurate is the estimate?
It's a solid first-pass estimate based on part volume and your rates. A slicer will refine print time with supports, layer height, and travel moves — but for quoting, this gets you in the right range in seconds.
